The 2018 East Varsity Football Team had their best season since the opening of the school. Their overall outcome was five wins, four losses, and zero ties.  Their league outcome was five-three-zero.

The team scored a total 228 offensive points this season with only 89 against them; not including their playoff game against Brandon High School in Ortonville, Michigan. The football team went to playoffs, and won for the first time ever in school history. The game score was 22-15, Cougars .

Senior Captain Nicholas Helfrick said, “This year, we were stronger, better and faster than ever.”

Varsity Football Coach Joe Pesci believed the reason why the 2018 varsity football season was the best was because the team wanted to make it to playoffs.

Going into the 2018 season, the football team developed the motto “Get One More”, said Coach Pesci. Their main goal was to take the season one game at a time, and to not allow a loss to distract the team from winning their next game.

Sophomore wide receiver Dorian Armstrong said, “We’re better than what some of our outcomes have shown.”

Helfrick has been playing football for 12 years: flag, the South Lyon youth group Panthers, and now high school football. “This year’s team is the best team I’ve ever played on. We’ve bonded and created a strong brotherhood,” said Helfrick.

He was on the first team from South Lyon East to beat South Lyon, the first to have the most wins in a season and the first to go to playoffs.

“We are very fortunate to have a great group of seniors who have a lot of experience and have committed to our program and the offseason workouts,” said Coach Pesci.

The team has 24 seniors who will be leaving, including their captains: Helfrick, Christopher Kaminski, Colt Kovach and Jon Carter.

Dorian Armstrong is grateful for what the seniors have shown him in his past two years on the team, “They’ve taught me so much, and I am very grateful for everything. They’re like older brothers for me and all the other players,” said Armstrong.

Coach Pesci  said about the seniors leaving, “I cannot thank them enough for everything that they have done for our program.”

Pesci is glad to have been part of the seniors lifes and see how they have all grown. Both on the field and off.
