With football season over the Varsity Pom team’s competitive season is already underway.

The team’s first competition was Saturday, November 9 at Lake Orion High School.

The SLEVP team has been practicing for competition season since the summer. They started learning their routines from two choreographers that came in and taught them.

Sophomore Marisa Martin said they use weights to strengthen their arms during practice and it gets very tiring very quickly.

Another way the team has been preparing for their competition season is that they perform at some of the home basketball games.

Coach Renee Falahee said, “We begin preparing for competition season in the beginning of summer. After choreography is taught it is all about precision! Practicing hard and with precision is what we focus on to best prepare our team.”

Junior Audrey Parson said, “So far this has been the most talented season we’ve ever had. The talent on our team is crazy good. I think we are going to do really good for our competition season this year once our routines are super clean, but this year we’re looking really good.”

The Varsity Pom team performs at UDA Dance Competitions. UDA stand for Universal Dance Association. The UDA has over 500 plus camps and teaching over 35,000 high school and college dance teams.

The girls had four home football game performances. They practice four days a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2:30-5:30 and 8:00-12:00 on Saturdays. The team practices in the dance room most days, but whenever they get the chance they practice in the gym for more space.

The girls practice hard for two routines to perform. They must do both of them at each competition they compete in.

“This is the first time we have gone to competition in November so we had to really work hard to be ready so early in the season,” said Falahee.

The team is excited for a successful competitive season and are hoping they will also be successful at Nationals this year.
