South Lyon East has received the honor to host the MSVMA District Choral Festival this year on March 7 and 8.
The Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) District Choral Festival is a choir event which consists of different schools and their choirs commuting to the hosting school to perform for judges, get judges feedback/judges clinic, and sight read music for another judge.
The choir get scored for each event and which will conclude in a final overall score. 24-45 points is 4th/Developing, 46-72 points is 3rd/Fair, 72-95 is 2nd/Good, and 96-120 is the highest category/Excellent. Choirs that score excellent will qualify for State Choral Festival.
There are many different requirements that a school has to have in order to be considered to host. Space is a big part of it. The school must have enough room to accommodate a warm-up room, performance area, and a sight reading room. Having enough parking is a huge consideration as well.
Hosting the District festival is a big deal and lots of preparation goes into coordinating the event. The hosting had to be approved last year and many people are involved in making this decision including the principal.
Students also get involved on the day of the festival. “I will be one of the volunteers that will show the schools around keep them on time,” Choir Member Athena Laxamana says.
East’s Choir Director Mr. Middaugh says, “I like to show off our building, I work in a really beautiful building. We go to school in a beautiful building and I’m proud of it. So having my peers and other choir teachers see it feels good and I’m excited to show off our building.”
South Lyon East is excited to have the pleasure of hosting the MSVMA District Choral Festival this Thursday and Friday and will join many fellow schools to perform.
There will be no bells for the school that day as not to interrupt the judging and performances throughout the festival.
