The 14-8 South Lyon East Cougars Boys Varsity Basketball team verses Walled Lake Western in the first District 14 Tournament game at Novi High School this evening. The game begins at 5:30 p.m., and tickets will be sold for district games online at GoFAN.
Student Section leaders have called for a “white-out” theme for SLE attendees.
Preston Shipman is a senior and a captain on the East Varsity basketball team. He has been playing the sport since he was in 3rd grade and loves the unique competitiveness of the sport.
To improve the team’s record, Shipman says, “The Biggest thing we need to improve on to make us a better team is better execution of our plays, being less sloppy.”
The team’s MOTTO is the phrase “ALL GAS NO BREAKS” and it has been this team’s driving force. The team relies on its fast breaks to score most of their buckets and it wears the other team down.
Jackson Hewett is a senior on the Varsity Basketball team. He’s been playing for 14 years and dedicates his true love for the game to his dad.
Hewett’s fun personality acts as a glue for the team, according to his teammates, “He always goes Crazy no matter if he’s on the court, bench, and don’t get us started on the bus rides home after an away game W.”
If Hewett’s personality does not grab your attention, it’s hard to ignore his hard work on the court. He is always sprinting down the court ready to make a play for his team he says, “The team’s motto is ALL GAS NO BREAKS! and I believe that separates us from the other teams and out-works them.”
The team also finds a leader in Dominic Giovannini, a senior captain of the Varsity football and basketball team. He says he gained his love of the game from his dad who played college basketball and has been playing since the 3rd grade.
Giovannini said, “This team’s chemistry and brotherhood from all the seniors will lead them to success.”
The team’s excitement and style of play is very entertaining and will propel them into districts with confidence.
