With spring arriving, the South Lyon East track season approaches. The season begins on March 10, with first practices located inside the gym which will quickly transfer outside.
Recently the head coach resigned. The team is looking for a new head coach and still has aspirations to be competitive.
Drew Ministrelli, a 4-year varsity athlete, is a captain on the track team. He runs the 100m race, throws shot put, throws discuss, and long jumps. Ministrelli says, “Losing our coach motivates us to hold each other accountable, encourage our teammates, and focus more than ever to have another successful season.”
With several previous successful seasons, East track athletes have been consistently receiving medals resulting in the players having high expectations for the upcoming year.
Senior Captain Mitchell Hodge participates in the high jump and has been a part of track for three years. Hodge says, “Last year I broke the city record for high jump at 6 feet 5 inches. This year I hope to achieve some personal goals such as being the best in the LVC at high jump, but mainly to earn medals as a team.”
Getting closer to the season, the excitement is rising amongst the athletes.
Jacob Mack is statistically the school’s best long distance runner, he is a senior at South Lyon East and may be the most excited of all.
Mack says, “ I am mostly excited for the mile run and hopefully beating the school record. I am also excited for the practices to have fun but also achieve the goals we’ve all been working so hard to accomplish.”
