East Athlete Spotlight: Luke Nicholson
South Lyon East’s own Luke Nicholson is the captain of East’s varsity soccer team. The Cougar’s soccer program is new to the kind of success they experienced this season, and Nicholson is one of the biggest factors behind it.
“The goal right now is to get to districts, maybe win the LVC Tournament and see how far we can go as far as regionals and maybe get to states,” Nicholson said when asked about the goals for the remainder of the team’s season. He did admit that the team still has some work to do in terms of developing chemistry and grabbing a couple more wins, but is optimistic about his team’s future.
On-field chemistry is vital to any sport, and Nicholson has developed some of it with his teammates. “I like playing with Dylan Kraus, Conner McNamara. I think Conner McNamara can use his speed to his advantage and play through the ball, so he’s good at that.”
Nicholson had several offers to play exclusively for club teams, but ultimately decided to play for East in his senior year. Ultimately, he chose East over them in order to have fun with his senior year and “get away from all the competition and just have fun”.
Nicholson is ranked nationally as a three star recruit and intends to continue playing soccer in college. His two favorites right now are the University of Kentucky and the University of Dayton, but his collegiate plans don’t affect the way he plays. He “ just kind of wants to be humble and keep playing.”
