The South Lyon East girls tennis team is ready for another exciting season this spring. As matches beign, players and coaches are focused on improving their skills, building a strong bonded team, and making a push towards regionals this year.
One of the most exciting parts to the start of the season is that there were no cuts during tryouts this year, allowing every athlete the chance to compete and improve their skills within the program.
Having a full roster has created a positive and competitive environment at practice. Players are pushing themselves and each other to improve while also supporting each other as teammates. For many athletes, the opportunity to be part of the team is a great deal. As they are gaining valuable match experience and new friendships along the way.
The Cougars have had strong seasons in the past, making it all the way to the State Tournament in both 2022 and 2023. Those appearances helped make a name for the girls tennis team, noting them as a respected and competitive team. Last season, the team came very close to qualifying again but finished just shy of making it out of regionals. That experience has motivated the players to work even harder this year with hopes of returning to the states again.
This season also brings some new leadership to the program. The team welcomes three new coaches, including new varsity head coach Craig Clark. Coach Clark previously coached the junior varsity team and has stepped up to lead the varsity team this season. The players are excited to work with him and continue building a strong and competitive women’s program.
Senior captain Julia Winter is especially excited about the upcoming season and her role as a leader. She hopes to keep the team’s energy high and make sure everyone stays positive and motivated throughout the season.
“I’m really excited to lead the team this year and keep the energy high,” Winter said. “We have a lot of talented players and I’m looking forward to seeing how much we can grow together.”
Senior Laci Akana is also looking forward to the warmer weather and the chance to compete in outdoor spring matches.
“I can’t wait for the warm spring matches coming up,” Akana said. “It’s always fun getting back outside and competing with the team.”
Sophomore Isla Tucker is excited to continue building on her experience on the team as well. After gaining valuable experience last season, she has been improving during the off season.
“I’m really excited for my second year on the team and to show the hard work I put in during the off-season,” Tucker said. “I’ve been practicing a lot and I’m ready to compete and keep improving this year.”
With strong leadership from the seniors, returning players gaining experience, and new coaching staff bringing fresh energy, the South Lyon East girls tennis team is ready to take on the season. The Cougars are hoping their hard work will pay off as they compete for another chance to make it to the state tournament later this season.
